JetBrains has released preliminary findings from their 2026 Developer Ecosystem Survey that reveal a dramatic transformation in the AI coding tools market, with Claude Code achieving unprecedented dominance while established players face significant challenges. The comprehensive study, conducted between April and May 2026 with participation from more than 15,000 developers globally, provides crucial insights into how AI coding agents have evolved from experimental technologies to indispensable components of professional software development.

The survey data demonstrates that AI coding assistance has reached mainstream adoption, with an overwhelming 90 percent of professional developers incorporating AI coding agents into their work routines at least weekly. More significantly, 68 percent of developers now use these tools daily, indicating that AI assistance has become integral to the software development process rather than an occasional supplement.

Mikhail Bogdanov from JetBrains highlighted the most remarkable trend: Claude Code's explosive growth trajectory. The platform has surged from a mere 3 percent market share in 2025 to commanding 39 percent in 2026, representing more than a twelve-fold increase in adoption. This growth has established Claude Code as the most widely used AI coding tool, with usage rates double those of its nearest competitor.

The decline of GitHub Copilot represents one of the most significant shifts in the AI tools landscape. Once the undisputed leader that introduced AI-assisted coding to mainstream developers in 2023, Copilot has experienced a notable decrease in usage from 29 percent to 21 percent year-over-year. This decline is particularly striking given that awareness levels for both Claude Code and GitHub Copilot remain equal at 79 percent, suggesting that developers are making conscious decisions to switch platforms based on performance and features rather than lack of knowledge about alternatives.

The geographic distribution of adoption reveals interesting patterns, with Claude Code achieving even higher penetration in the United States market at 47 percent. This means that nearly half of American developers have integrated Claude Code into their professional workflows, indicating particularly strong adoption in one of the world's most important software development markets.

Codex has emerged as another success story, growing from zero market presence to capturing 16 percent of developers. This growth has positioned Codex ahead of Cursor, which maintains 12 percent usage despite having higher brand awareness at 75 percent compared to Codex's 65 percent recognition. The disparity between awareness and usage suggests that developers who try Codex tend to adopt it, indicating strong product-market fit.

The survey results also reveal challenges for established players, including JetBrains itself. The company's AI Assistant has experienced a decline in both awareness and usage, with awareness dropping from 57 percent to 51 percent and usage falling from 13 percent to 9 percent. Similarly, Junie, JetBrains' autonomous AI coding agent, has seen decreased adoption, suggesting that even established development tool providers face pressure from specialized AI coding platforms.

These findings reflect broader trends in the AI industry, where rapid innovation and intense competition are reshaping market dynamics. The success of Claude Code demonstrates that superior technology and user experience can quickly overcome established market positions, while the decline of previously dominant tools shows that past success provides no guarantee of future market share.
