Researchers from METR conducted a randomized controlled trial showing that despite expectations of a productivity boost from AI coding assistants such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot, developers were actually slowed down by about 19%. Developers mistakenly believed they were completing tasks faster by around 20%. The study involved experienced open source contributors working on real issues and challenges assumptions about immediate efficiency gains from these 'vibe coder' tools.
